What does the Beaufort County Arts Council do when the gallery is in-between exhibits? It turns the gallery into a classroom.

In addition to the two workshops by Jake Van Wyk already scheduled for Aug. 21, BCAC will add another workshop presented by the Natural Fibers Group on Sept. 4.

Join the Natural Fibers Group and Fiber Artist Pamela Zimmerman and learn to weave your own rustic cornucopia to grace your holiday table. The cornucopia is an ancient symbol of abundance and nourishment. The workshop will take participants through the process of creating their own cornucopia from start to finish. Cornucopias will be woven from all natural, wild chemical and pesticide free local vines. The completed project can be decorated through autumn, through Thanksgiving, Christmas and beyond. Unlike the items in the accompanying photo, cornucopias created in the workshop will suitable for tabletops — approximately 12 inches by 16 inches.

The workshop will last from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. with a one-hour break for lunch. All supplies will be provided, however cornucopia fillers are not included. Participants may want to bring leather or garden gloves.

Zimmerman is an expert fiber artist, with over 1,000 woven pieces to her name. She has won over 200 art and exhibit awards. Her work has appeared in Crafts Report Magazine (2005, 2006, 2007 and 2009); Art Doll Quarterly (2007 and 2008); Shuttle, Spindle and Dyepot (2007, 2009 and 2010); and in numerous fine art shows. Zimmerman recently has been published in the book by Catherine Devine, “Coiled Designs for Gourd Art,” All Things Considered IV, National Basketry Organization Exhibition catalog; and Backwoods Home Magazine, where she authored an article on random weave. Zimmerman has been selected as a 2009 NICHE Award Finalist for her piece, “Catching the Pale, Pale Moon.” In March 2009, Zimmerman was invited by the World Craft Council (WCCI, an International Organization affiliated with UNESCO) to join their photo calleries of North American craftsmen on their new website. Zimmerman is also honored to have been asked to join the faculty of the National Basketry Organizations’ Traditions and Innovations in Basketry VI. Along with fiber artist Lynn Hoyt, Pamela co-founded the local Natural Fibers Group in 2004, a weaving guild that focuses on natural fibers.
