THE 2014 VIVIAN DELORIS NORMAN SCHOARSHIP RECIPIENTS
Two Washington County students will receive $500 each from the Vivian Deloris Norman Scholarship Fund, an organization that, for the fifth year, has awarded scholarships in honor of the late Vivian “Lois” Norman who passed away in January 2009.
Olivia Gabrielle Blount (Creswell High School), the daughter of Tammy Davenport and Victon Blount, Jr., will attend East Carolina University where she will study Theatre Arts, concentrating on Design and Production. She hopes to use her creativity to develop sets, costumes, lighting and every other aspect of programs and presentations. She has maintained honor roll status throughout high school, and was active in student government (senior class president), vice president of the school’s chapter of the National Honor Society, JROTC, as well as volley ball and cheerleading.
Aviyana Taylor Smallwood (Plymouth High School) is the daughter of John and Jackie Smallwood. She will attend the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, where she will study Exercise Science/Kinesiology. This area, the study of the movement of the human body, has become very popular with the number of injured athletes or wounded war veterans. She has participated in a number of organizations, both academic and athletic and has maintained honor roll and principal’s list throughout her school career. She is vice president of the PHS chapter of the National Honor Society and president of her senior class.
The Vivian Deloris Norman Scholarship Award is based on academic merit and need. It continues to be made possible through the contributions of family and friends who supported the fundraising efforts with donations and those who physically participate in the events which take place each Memorial Day Weekend. “Lois” who was an athlete, used her skills to “connect” with young people and encourage them to continue their education. We would like to thank the public for allowing us to continue that “connection.”
