A Washington man has been arrested for allegedly shooting another man on a city street, according to the Washington Police Department.
On Sept. 4, Washington police responded to the report of gunfire on the 1000 block of Fowle Drive around 11:30 p.m. At the scene, they found Michael A. Davis, 26, of Manuel Drive, the victim of several gunshot wounds. Numbering among those gunshot wounds were one to the back and one to the leg, according to Washington Police Department spokesman Lt. William Chrismon.
The shooting occurred in the street; the weapon, a handgun, Chrismon said.
Davis was transported to Vidant Beaufort Hospital then later to Vidant Medical Center in Greenville.
Friday, police arrested Jamel Malik Griffin, 21, of East Martin Luther King Jr. Drive in relation to the shooting. Griffin was charged with assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill, inflicting serious injury. Griffin was held at the Beaufort County Detention Center under a $50,000 bond.
Griffin has previously been convicted of larceny and possession with intent to sell a controlled substance; Davis has an extensive history of breaking and entering convictions dating back to 2004.
“We’re still looking into the motive,” Chrismon said. “If anyone would like to give any additional information, it would be greatly appreciated.”
Historically, shootings are infrequent occurrences in Washington, but there has been a small spike in the number of reports of shots fired within city limits over the past few weeks, according to departmental records. Chrismon said the WPD is responding to the increase in reports.
“We’re increasing our patrols in the areas where (shots fired) have been reported,” Chrismon said.
