CHOCOWINITY — The Community Youth Football League season continued Saturday with a 12U Division contest between the Greenville Titans Black and the Chocowinity Indians.

Both teams got off to a slow start to begin the game, with neither being able to move the ball on their first couple of drives.

With the first quarter in the books and the score knotted at zero, it appeared as if this was going to be a game highlighted by defensive performances. However, with about six minutes left in the half, the Titans got the ball on their own 30-yard line. After Greenville nearly turned the ball over on the first play, Le’Shaun Atchison took the handoff and ran 53 yards for the touchdown to put Greenville ahead 6-0.

Chocowinity’s offense marched on to the field looking to score a touchdown of their own. But it wasn’t meant to be as on fourth down Atchison intercepted a pass and returned it all the way to the opponent’s two-yard line. Two plays later, the Titans offense was celebrating again after Aidan Hvastkovs outran the defense and found the end zone for another score with 1:05 left in the second quarter. A successful two-point conversion made it 14-0.

The second half began much like the first, with not much offense and strong defensive play by each team. It appeared as if neither team was going to score again, but then Daniel Powers got his hands on the ball and weaved his way through the defense for a 55-yard touchdown run with 45 seconds left in the third quarter. That made score 22-0, which is how the game would end.

Big plays in the running game paved the way for the Titans offense, which was lead by Atchison, who ran for 56 yards and a touchdown, while Powers racked up 58 yards and a score of his own.

Chocowinity will face the Bulldogs in Belhaven at 3 p.m. next week, while Greenville Titan Black hosts Greenville Titan Green at noon.
