PRISTINE FINISH: Washington running backs Sueshawn Poe and Caleb Kite look on as teammates participate in the traditional Gatorade (or water) dump on head coach Steven Flowers.

The Washington junior varsity football team concluded its memorable 2014 campaign Thursday night in near perfect fashion, knocking off the defending conference champion North Johnston, 50-6.

“We feel good about this one,” said head coach Steven Flowers. “They beat us 6-0 last year and we had our chances to win it and we didn’t, but we came out tonight and played good ball.”

Committing just two penalties all game, Washington continuously challenged the Panthers’ front seven with its deep roster of running backs, led by Sueshawn Poe and Hykeem Ruffin. Poe, the primary back in the first half, finished with 69 yards and two touchdowns, while Ruffin, who led all rushers through the final 24 minutes, notched 82 yards and a touchdown on the ground.

“We played five different guys back there tonight,” Flowers said. “We knew going in they weren’t going to be able to match our speed. We got some decent blocks and outran them.”

A 25-yard run from Poe on the first play from scrimmage established the tempo and the Pam Pack never looked back. It took just four plays and about three minutes for Poe to find the end zone for the first touchdown.

After a 35-yard punt return from Matthew Black on the ensuing drive, the Washington running game quickly capitalized on the good field position. Big runs from Caleb Kite, quarterback Sharwan Staton and Poe placed Washington in the red zone, where Jarquez Ruffin was able to finish with a three-yard touchdown run.

On the first drive of the second half, Black made even more noise on special teams. Following a four and out. The sophomore wideout, who entered with four catches for four touchdowns on the year, juked out a series of North Johnston defenders and returned a punt 65 yards for a touchdown, giving Washington a 22-0 lead.

But Black wasn’t finished.

On the first play of the Panthers’ next drive, Black jumped a route and came up with the interception. And after some dynamic runs from Hykeem Ruffin, Staton was able to punch it in on a quarterback keeper to give Washington a 28-0 lead at the break.

The Pam Pack piled it on in the third quarter, blocking a punt, recovering a fumble and notching two more touchdowns courtesy of Poe and Hykeem Ruffin.

In the fourth, Flowers fielded some of his secondary backs. Kite opened up the quarter with a 20-yard run, as Jarquez Ruffin and Elijah Spain filled in the gaps. Kite scored the final touchdown for the Pack on a 5-yard run up the middle.

With the second-team defense on the field, North Johnston found the end zone with less than two minutes left, but it was Washington that walked away with a big win and the conference championship.

“It feels good. That was the goal and here we are,” Flowers said.

With the victory, Washington finishes the season 9-1, as the jayvee sophomores and a handful of freshmen prepare to make the jump to varsity tomorrow, when the Pam Pack travels to Kenly.
