From the New York Theatre Ballet
Back by popular demand after two wildly successful seasons performing at Tarboro’s Keihin Auditorium, New York Theatre Ballet will present The Alice-In-Wonderland Follies, plus three enchanting short ballets guaranteed to get your feet tapping and filling your hearts with joy. The Company returns with this new program to the Keihin Auditorium at Edgecombe Community College on Thursday, April 16, at 7:30 p.m.
The performance is free, having been generously underwritten by the Furman-Mathewson Trust of the Edgecombe County Memorial Library.
Broadway World review — “New York Theatre Ballet’s production of The Alice-In-Wonderland Follies is a fantastic production. This is a rave review because there is no more delightful or charming production to be found in New York City. The sheer inventiveness of the choreography is comparable to anything on Broadway or that can be seen in the large ballet venues at Lincoln Center. New York theatre Ballet is a New York cultural jewel and the nation’s most widely seen chamber ballet company. The dancers are attractive, accomplished, versatile, and technically secure. Beyond this, they are excellent actors and entertainers.”
The program also includes two revivals by world renowned choreographers Merce Cunningham and Antony Tudor, and a ballet by emerging artist Matthew Neenan. Cunningham’s Cross Currents premiered in 1964 and is set to Conlon Nancarrow’s Rhythm Studies for Player Piano. Tudor’s Trio Con Brio had not been seen since 1952 until Artistic Director Diana Byer reconstructed it from a silent film found in the archives at Jacob’s Pillow. Matthew Neenan’s Game Two was choreographed especially for NYTB in 2008, and along with Trio Con Brio, will be played live by NYTB Music Director Michael Scales.
Tickets for this free performance can be obtained in advance by calling Keihin’s box office at 252-823-5166 x187. Seating is reserved and tickets are required. Remaining tickets will be available at the door on the day of the performance.
