Polly Cora Smith Cox

May 6, 1920 – April 25, 2015

 

Ms. Polly Cora Smith Cox, age 94, a resident of 1060 Goose Creek Road, Washington, died Saturday, April 25, 2015 at Vidant Medical Center in Greenville.

Funeral services will be held 11:00 AM Wednesday, April 29, 2015 from the Chapel of Paul Funeral Home and Crematory in Washington, conducted by Chris Hux and Don Atkins. Burial will follow in Oakdale Cemetery.

Larry Wayne Jones, Jr., David Jay Evans, William Brennan Cox, Matthew Steele Cox, Matthew Ryan Hihn, Elwood Brian Swain, Kevin Hunt Newman, Steven David Alligood, and William (Bill) A. Bell will serve as pallbearers.

Mrs. Cox was born in Beaufort County on May 6, 1920.  She was the daughter of the late Tillmon Farrow Smith and Lossie Gertrude Lewis Smith.  Mrs. Cox was a retired teacher’s assistant/reading tutor with Beaufort County Schools.  She was known at Bath High School for her sea foam candy, her art work that she displayed on the school bulletin boards, and the childhood fables she shared with her students.  Mrs. Cox was involved in the P.T.A. where she had served as President as well as a 4-H Leader.   She was a longtime member of the 76’ers E.C.A. (Extention Community Association), more commonly known as the Home Demonstration Club.

Mrs. Cox was a member of Athen’s Chapel Church of Christ and member of the Ladies’ aide.  She was the first person to be baptized at Woodard’s Pond Church of Christ when the church was first established there. Mrs. Cox was a member of the Eastern Star where she had served as Worthy Matron.   She was a member of the Bath High School Preservation and at the time of her passing, was the second oldest living member of Bath High School.  Mrs. Cox loved to read as long as her eye sight permitted.

Mrs. Cox was married to William E. “Bill” Cox, who preceded her in death, January 24, 1990.

Mrs. Cox is survived by her children, William Steele Cox (Brenda), Sandra Gaye Cox Evans, Sheila Gail Cox Jones (Larry), James Milton Cox (Norma) and Kerry David Cox all of Washington; grandchildren, Leigh Cox Swain (Brian), Kamala Cox Newman (Kevin), Amy Cox Alligood (Steven), William Brennan Cox, Reagan Cox Askew, Matthew Steele Cox (Sarah),Chenoa Evans Jones, Sharon Evans Lowen (Eddie), David Jay Evans (Paige), Larry Wayne Jones, Sr. (Mary Helen), Crystal Sheila Jones Bell (Bill), Kendall Alison Cox Hihn (Matt); great grandchildren, Brianna Ashleigh Swain, Holden Eli Newman, Austin Luke Newman, Mason Steele Newman, Lauren Alexandria Alligood, Logan Wade Alligood, Dawson Rowland Askew, Hayden Matthew Cox, Cory Jones, Cameron Jones, Josh Evans, Emma Evans, Evan Lowen, Kristina Lowen, Dorothy Amanda Jones, Katie Ann Jones, Moriah Alyssa Jones, Chloe Bryanna Jones, William Anthony Bell, Gregory Thomas Bell, Benjamin Carpenter Bell, Savannah Corinne Bell and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents and her husband, Mrs. Cox was preceded in death by a son, Halden Gene Cox; grandchildren, Madison Faith Askew, Morgan Kori Askew, Caleb Kade Askew, Cora Alyssa Jones, David Farrow Jones; brothers, Tillmon Carnell Smith, John Warren Smith, Elijah Leo Smith; sister, Nettie Smith Stox Mason and niece, Faye Stox Scheffus.

The family will receive friends from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM Tuesday, April 28, 2015 at Paul Funeral Home and Crematory in Washington and other times at her home.
