CAMP LEJEUNE — The Northside golf team entered Monday’s Coastal Plains Conference Tournament with what appeared to be a comfortable 19-stroke lead on second place Lejeune. But at the conclusion of the final regular season match at the Paradise Point Golf Course, it was the defending conference champion Devil Pups sitting on top with sole possession of first place, yet another championship under their belts.

“We let the moment get the better of us,” Northside head coach Joe Burns said in an email to the Daily News. “We have learned from this experience and are making the necessary improvements. We will be a different team on Monday at regionals.”

Northside, which shot a 350 at Paradise Point on March 16, finished with a score of 390 on Monday, it’s second-highest mark of the season. Taking the match, Lejeune finished with a score of 358.

While Lejeune and Northside played 18 holes, the rest of the CPC field — Southside, Jones Senior, Pamlico County and East Carteret — played nine. And after struggling for most of the season, it was the Seahawks’ score of 221 that was good enough to take third place in the match, edging the Hurricanes by one stroke.

For the Panthers, Riley Van Staalduinen finished in second place overall with a score of 86, while Tucker Mooring finished in third place by two strokes with a score of 87. The Devil Pups’ Grady Anderson, a North Carolina State golf commit, notched a match-best 73.

The Panthers will head to Cypress Landing on Monday for the 1-A eastern regional championships set for 8:30 a.m. Washington, Northside and Southside will then compete in the annual Beaufort County Cup at the Washington Yacht and Country Club on May 6 at 1 p.m.
