TUESDAY ROUNDUP: Terra Ceia baseball falls to Lawrence in TIC Tournament championship

LASKER — It took two extra innings for the defending Tarheel Independent Conference Champions, Lawrence Academy, to knock off underdog Terra Ceia, 3-2, in the title game, held at Northeast Academy on Tuesday. More information on this game will be available shortly and in tomorrow’s paper.

 

WASHINGTON BASEBALL BLOWS OUT BEDDINGFIELD

The Washington baseball team activated the mercy rule on Tuesday against conference foe Beddingfield (2-10, 0-8 Eastern Plains), a 10-0 victory to give the Pam Pack its second consecutive win.

From the start, the Bruins pitching staff dug itself into a hole, unable to stop the host’s lineup. Washington posted five runs in the first inning, the most its scored in a single frame all season, and went on to score two in the second inning, two in the fourth inning and one in the fifth inning to secure the walk-off win.

Neil Jennings and Logan Little both finished the day 3-for-3 with an RBI, while Nick Everette and Matt Black notched two hits apiece.

Cody Godley picked up the shutout win in five innings, walking one and striking out four, while giving up just three hits.

“The guys played a full game with no offensive let downs and the defense made the plays to back up Cody on the mound,” said head coach Kevin Leggett.

With the win, Washington improves to 4-13 and moves into fourth place in the Eastern Plains Conference (3-5).

 

NORTHSIDE BASEBALL WALKS OFF AGAINST JONES SENIOR

PINETOWN — The Northside baseball team defeated Jones Senior (9-8, 5-5 Coastal Plains), 5-4, on Tuesday in walk-off fashion.

Senior Dalton Etheridge pitched six innings for the Panthers, allowing five hits and four runs (three earned), while striking out five. With the score knotted at four after six frames, senior Adam Cahoon entered the game in the top of the seventh and struck out the side, eventually picking up the win.

At the plate, singles by Jensen Hawkins, Ethan Cosentino and Chase Sauls served as the only hits on the afternoon for the Panthers, but the five walks allowed by Jones Senior proved to be the difference.

With the win, Northside improves to 5-13 (3-7 CPC) and will travel to Lejeune on Friday.

 

KELSEY LANG SHINES IN NORTHSIDE SOFTBALL ROUT OF JONES SENIOR

PINETOWN — The Northside softball team preserved its undefeated record on Tuesday after an 11-1 win over Jones Senior (9-6, 5-5 Coastal Plains) in a shortened six-inning contest.

Senior Kelsey Lang got the call and pitched all six innings, allowing one run on four hits, striking out nine. Kelsey Lang also was the leader at the plate, going 3-for-4 with a game-high four RBIs.

Junior Mackensi Swain also finished 3-for-4, notching two doubles, crossing home plate twice and picking up two RBIs. Whitney Cromwell, Rachel Lang and Alex Adams combined for the rest of Northside’s hits on the afternoon.

With the win, Northside improves to 15-0 (10-0 CPC) and will travel to Lejeune on Friday.

 

WASHINGTON GIRLS SOCCER BLASTS BEDDINGFIELD

The Washington girls’ soccer team activated the nine-goal mercy rule over Beddingfield on Tuesday at Choppy Wagner Stadium.

Backup goalie Samantha Sheppard continued her storybook freshman season, now having recorded 443 minutes without letting up a goal (24 saves), giving starting goalie Emily Alligood time in the field.

Senior Caitlyn Scott improved her season tally to 31 after a four-goal afternoon, while midfield counterpart Warner Little finished with one goal and two assists.

Sophomore Sydney Edwards notched two goals and an assist, while freshman striker Sydney Walker came through with two goals and an assist.

Scott’s performance also moves her to 78 total points (calculates goals and assists), which leads all NCHSAA players in all classes.

With the win, Washington improves to 12-4 (6-0 Eastern Plains) and will face J.H. Rose in Greenville today at 6 p.m., the final nonconference game of the season for the Pam Pack.
