MARJORIE W. SUMRELL

Jan. 11, 1924 – May 7, 2015

 

Marjorie W. Sumrell, age 91, a resident of Nags Head, NC passed away on May 7, 2015 at Colony Ridge Nursing & Rehabilitation Center in Nags Head, NC.   Mrs. Sumrell was born in Beaufort County, NC on January 11, 1924 to the late Edward J. and Mamie Taylor Whitley.    She attended Beaufort County Schools and received her Bachelor’s and Master’s Degrees from East Carolina University.

On June 4, 1945, she married Lewis Craven Sumrell, Sr., who predeceased her in 1966.  She was a retired librarian who worked for the USMC Library and was Director of Brown Library in Washington, NC. Mrs. Sumrell was a member of First Christian Church in Washington, NC. In her leisure time, she enjoyed gardening, reading and genealogy. She also traveled extensively, returning to Germany and Panama, where she previously lived, and also traveled to France, England, Belgium, Costa Rica and all the islands in the Caribbean. She dearly loved gazing at the water from her home situated on the Pamlico River.

Mrs. Sumrell was a friend to all, and was extremely supportive of others pursuing an education, serving as mentor to many.

She is survived by her children:  two daughters, Rebecca Farish and Rachel Sumrell, both of Kill Devil Hills, NC and a son, Lewis Craven Sumrell, Jr. of Greenville, NC. She is also survived by seven grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her daughter, Mary Etta S. Cole, and her sister, Edna Whitley Spruill.

A committal service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, May 9, 2015 at Oakdale Cemetery and will be officiated by Rev. Lance Perry. A celebration of her life will be held at a later date.
