Down East Seniors’ Club

The Down East Seniors Club held their September 2 meeting at the Blind Center of N.C. in Washington. President Stewart Rumley led the meeting. Bill Cheshire led the singing of “God Bless America” and John Tunstall gave the invocation. Dick Robinson and Dick Paul provided humor.
President Rumley introduced Kimberly Matthews, Public Health Education Specialist with the Beaufort County Health Department. Matthews told of the many services available at BCHD. For adults, they provide disease and health screening/testing and immunizations. For children, they provide care coordination from birth to five years of age, lead testing and immunizations. Also covered are family planning activities, WIC Supplemental Nutrition counseling, health promotion and education and communicable disease testing and management. They will soon be starting programs on diabetes care and smoking cessation. The Environmental Health section provides permits and inspections for restaurants, daycares, schools, nursing homes, lodging businesses, group homes, tattoo artists, street festivals, summer camps, jails, wells, septic systems and public swimming pools. This section also covers public health and environmental complaints, private well water samples, child lead poisoning investigation and vector control (such as mosquitoes).
