Richard Harris Cherry
Dec. 15, 1939 – Sept. 12, 2015
Richard Harris Cherry passed away September 12, 2015. He was the son of the late James Russell and Euzelia Harris Cherry and was born in Bear Grass on December 15, 1939. Richard was a graduate of Bear Grass High School and North Carolina State University. He served in the U. S. Army. Richard was very much a “people” person having worked in sales for many years with Scott’s in Washington and later at Cherry’s Cupboard in Bear Grass. He has hundreds of friends scattered around, many of which he befriended through his job or personal help he provided as a young man. He has been a big supporter of Bear Grass Charter School and of the Bear Grass community, having served on the Bear Grass Town Board for several years. Richard was also a strong supporter of his family, and showed his love in so many ways. He loved to read newspapers, watch all kinds of sports on TV, and loved old movies, westerns and Sudoku. Richard loved life, loved his friends, and family and would help them any way he could. He will be greatly missed.
Richard was predeceased by his parents, sister Patsy Cherry Owens and brothers William Archibal Cherry and James Dillon Cherry. He is survived by sisters Elizabeth Cherry Smith, Janie Cherry Coltrain and Margaret Cherry, brother Jerry Cherry, brother-in-law Calvin Owens, and nieces and nephews Brad Cherry, Eddie Coltrain, Steve Coltrain, Pam Coltrain and Paden Smith.
Visitation was held Monday from 7-8:30 PM at Biggs Funeral Home in Williamston and other times at the residence. Funeral service will be held Tuesday at 2:00 PM at Biggs Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Bryant Hines officiating, followed by burial at Martin Memorial Gardens.
