Two Mattamuskeet Elementary School students are giving back to those in need, just by utilizing the remnants of a familiar drink staple — a soda can.
Kelly and Ashley Williford, twin sisters living in Hyde County, delivered a collection of pop tabs from soda cans to Ronald McDonald House Charities on Sept. 9, as part of the organization’s recycling program.
Ronald McDonald House is a nonprofit organization that works to improve the lives of children by starting and sponsoring programs benefitting children in need.
According to a press release, the Williford sisters and Brooke Eakes, a former graduate of the Mattamuskeet Early College High School, were all encouraged by Engelhard Christian Church to help collect the tabs for the charity organization, collecting from the church and the elementary school.
The pop tabs from soda cans are a way for Ronald McDonald House to emphasize recycling and raise money for families, as the tabs are made of valuable, high-quality aluminum, according to the organization’s website.
The press release stated that classes at the elementary school also participated in a competition to see which one could collect the greatest weight of pop tabs. The winning class was rewarded with ice cream sundaes.
Overall, more than 60 pounds of tabs were collected from both Engelhard Christian Church and Mattamuskeet Elementary. The school collected pop tabs over the course of one month.
“I am proud of these girls and the work they have put into this project,” said the twins’ mother.
