There is strength — and healing — in numbers

Lung cancer is a serious matter, and it plagues millions of families across the nation.
Lung cancer accounts for more than a quarter of all cancer deaths, according to recent data. More people die from lung cancer than breast, colon and prostate cancer combined.
The disease wreaks havoc on the body, and while the brave battle fought by those who have lung cancer is painful, it’s also painful for the loved ones who stand by their sides.
But medical experts agree that lung cancer is best fought proactively and with a support group. The Marion L. Shepard Cancer Center is holding several events during the month of November as part of Lung Cancer Awareness Month — events for caregivers and survivors alike. Community partners, including Grace Lutheran Church, Brown Library and Wine and Design, will help host the events.
People need to take advantage of these types of free opportunities. If one has not yet been affected by lung cancer in some way, then he or she should at least become educated about the disease. Doing this will increase proactivity and help people learn the steps to take in the event of lung cancer.
And for the survivors and caregivers: They need to know that the community is behind them in the fight. They are not alone in this.
Support can mean the difference between life and death. In this case, especially, there certainly is strength in numbers. If those who are fighting lung cancer are being brave enough to look that disease in the face, then they deserve to have a team supporting them along the way.
Rather than face the struggle alone, find those supporters who will help give lung cancer the blow it deserves. And although November is devoted to lung cancer, the same goes for anyone fighting any type of cancer.
