From Brown Library

November is shaping up to be a month of change at the library. After 27 years of dedicated service, Director of Brown Library Gloria Moore has announced her retirement. While we are sad to see her go, we are also excited for her to enjoy this new chapter of life. We wish her all the best in her future endeavors.

The fire will burn forever! Join us to celebrate the release of “The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part II” at our premiere party on Nov. 20, at 4:30 p.m. Attendees will enjoy food inspired by the world of “The Hunger Games,” door prizes and the chance to win free movie tickets to see the new movie opening weekend. You can win the tickets by participating in either a trivia or costume contest. For the full rules and details, visit our Facebook page. This event is for ages 12 – 18. There is a required sign-up to attend this event. Visit the library or call us at 252-946-4300 to reserve your spot soon! A huge thank you goes out to the Friends of Brown Library for funding this event.

The votes are in — the library will officially begin hosting teen “hangout” events, starting Dec. 4 at 4:30 p.m. These relaxed events will provide our teen patrons a free-flowing space to do simply that – hang out. There is no signup to attend, and teens are welcome to come and go as they please. We will have snacks and an optional craft for those with busy fingers. Bring your homework, your sketchbook, your laptop, your school projects and chill out with some awesome likeminded individuals.

Many of you have already been asking about one of our favorite events of the year: the Winter Book Sale hosted by the Friends of Brown Library. Start collecting your pennies now — the official sale dates have been released! FOBL members will have special access on Jan. 21, from 5:30 to 8:00 p.m. (Don’t worry – there’s still plenty of time to become a member, and you can even sign up at the door the night of the event.) The sale will open to the public Jan. 22 and remain open until Jan. 24.

We’d also like to congratulate President of the FOBL Katie Lake on receiving the North Carolina Frannie Ashburn Volunteer of the Year Award! Katie accepted the award on Oct. 24, along with a $250 check for the Friends group, beating out candidates from across the state. Katie is an essential part of the FOBL, and we can’t thank her enough for her continued dedication to the library and to the FOBL.

The library will be closed Thursday, Nov. 26, and Friday, Nov. 27 in observance of Thanksgiving. We will reopen at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 29, and resume normal operating hours. We thank you in advance for your cooperation, and wish you a safe and fun holiday season.
