The University of Mount Olive at Washington, located at 4525 U.S. Highway 264 West in Washington, recently celebrated 10 years of serving the educational needs of Beaufort, Pitt and surrounding counties. The milestone was marked with a celebration that included guest speakers, a ribbon cutting and hors d’oeuvres.
UMO faculty, staff, students and alumni were on hand for the anniversary celebration, as were local business people, the Washington Beaufort County Chamber of Commerce members and other dignitaries.
Since opening its doors in 2005, UMO at Washington has experienced significant growth, having graduated nearly 800 students in the past 10 years. By stepping outside of the traditional confines of higher education, the University of Mount Olive has become one of the most unique and fastest growing higher education institutions in North Carolina.
This year alone, approximately 300 students at UMO at Washington will be considered non-traditional. Those students, with a median age of 31, will not only be seeking a college education, but also balancing full-time jobs and family responsibilities.

The university, sponsored by the Convention of Original Free Will Baptists, has locations in Mount Olive, New Bern, Wilmington, Seymour Johnson Air Force Base, Research Triangle Park, Washington, Jacksonville and Smithfield at Johnston Community College.
