Terrorism will not win

Today’s world is vastly different than it was 50 years ago — even 15 years ago.

That fact was made apparent yesterday as terrorists opened fire in several locations in Paris, France, killing more than 120 people and injuring at least 350.

As the French mourn the loss of their loved ones, it can be easy to be disconnected and think this issue is far away.

But in reality, these attacks should matter to every country that has stood in defense of freedom and the rights of its citizens.

It brings into perspective the importance of America’s freedom and how vigilantly it needs to be protected. Now more than ever, the people of France need support and brotherhood, even from somewhere as far away as Beaufort County.

This is also a sobering reminder in light of Veterans Day this week. The United States has been fortunate to have so many willing individuals who have laid down their lives on the doorstep of freedom. And not to mention those who were lucky enough to be able to make it back home.

The veterans’ sacrifices are now more important than ever. Every day should be treated as Veterans Day, and those who are fighting overseas still need support. The fight is not over, and that’s something the world can learn from the tragedy in France.

By supporting and honoring the nation’s military, terrorism falls short of victory. By supporting the people of France, terrorism will be met with an iron wall of unity. With freedom as the cause, terrorism will not be allowed to gain a foothold.

Even support from Beaufort County residents can make a difference in the big scheme of things. Freedom isn’t free and it’s still a cause for which to fight.
