The sparkling ball has dropped, kisses have been exchanged and leftover confetti tells a story of celebrations past.

People across the globe look forward to a new year with anticipation — creating resolutions to make it the best one yet.

Among those resolutions should be a commitment to loved ones.

The start of 2016 means the gift of another year to spend with family and friends, and that time should not be taken for granted. Loved ones make life a little sweeter: they share one’s laughter; they share one’s pain and give comfort when needed; they offer invaluable support in any situation.

So during 2016, make family and friends a top priority. Set aside time in one’s schedule to get together, even during a busy time. Schedule a dinner with friends after work. Plan a romantic date night with one’s spouse. Suggest day trips or activities to do with the whole family.

Life almost always has a way of getting in the way, but it’s important to not let that happen.

Ultimately, no one is guaranteed another year. Some local families have already come face to face with this fact, even as recently as this past week. It’s a sobering topic to think about, but savoring the present should be considered while anticipating the future of 2016. It’s always better to savor the time now, rather than regret the lost time later.

The new year is sure to be full of ups and downs, but it’s loved ones who will be there for the mountains and the valleys. It’s not too late to make them a priority.

Family and friends are what make life a little better. Make it a serious resolution in 2016 to put them at the top of the list.
