Mitchell Paul Newman, 70, of 375 Main Street, Swan Quarter, died Monday, February 15, 2016, at his residence.
Born in Beaufort County, September 29, 1945, he was the son of the late Richard Dudley and Muriel Wahab Newman. He was married to the former Patsy Jo Sadler who survives. Long active in community affairs, he served as Emergency Management Director for many years, was a veteran of the U.S. Army, was a former member of the Board of County Commissioners, a member of Ancient Free and Accepted Masons, Atlantic Lodge #294, attended Swan Quarter Baptist Church and for several years prior to his death, he was terminal manager at the Swan Quarter Ferry Terminal as an employee of the N.C. Ferry System.
Mitchell was a person with a generous and giving spirit, always giving more than his share in making life better for people in Hyde County. He was devoted to his family and provided for them in many ways. Beyond his immediate family, he was known to all as a helpful person and gave of himself through many organizations and committees so that others might do better.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Thursday in the Swan Quarter Baptist Church. Mike Wheeler and Jimmy Johnson will officiate.
Surviving is his wife, Patsy Jo S. Newman; three daughters, Michelle L. Newman of Swan Quarter and her fiancée Danny Johnson, Bridget N. Melvin and husband John of Swan Quarter, Annette N. Carroll and husband Dennis of Garner; two sisters, Florence N. Abele of Swan Quarter, Nancy Newman of Ponzer; two brothers, Gilbert Howard Newman of Pantego and Thomas Edward Newman and wife Susie of Swan Quarter; five grandchildren, Domanic Newman, Porter Carroll, Grant Melvin, Langlee Carroll, Hudson Melvin; and one adopted granddaughter, Brittany Nixon of Belhaven.
He was preceded in death by a sister Nell Sears and two brothers Richard Dudley Newman Jr. and Harvey Wahab Newman.
The family will receive friends Wednesday evening from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm at Bryan Funeral Service, Swan Quarter.
