PINETOWN — After Saturday’s dramatic close win against Southside, the Washington Pam Pack dominated an over-matched Columbia squad 13-2 in five innings in its second game of the Northside Easter Tournament. Behind a solid outing by junior Tripp Barfield, and a steady display of offense, the game was never in doubt. The Pam Pack moved on to the championship game Monday evening.
Barfield started strong for the Pack facing only 10 batters in the first three innings. He did not surrender a hit until the fourth when Columbia banged out three hits and plated two runs. It was negligible, though, as Washington had a 9-0 advantage heading into the inning.
That was the defense’s only trouble spot as the Pam Pack set Columbia down 1-2-3 in the fifth to end the game. For the five-inning game, Barfield gave up three hits, only one walk, and he struck out eight Wildcat batters.
Offensively, the Pack worked three Wildcat pitchers for nine hits, nine walks, and four hit batters. The boys started fast with a three spot to open the game. Juniors Matt Black and Cody Godly both led off with singles and Black advanced to score after a Wildcat error, a fielder’s choice by sophomore Fred Holscher, which erased Godly, and a passed ball. Holscher also came around to score on a passed ball.
The Pack was gifted one more run when junior Logan Little walked, Barfield and junior Nick Everette were both hit by pitches to load the bases, and sophomore Tyler Harrell was walked to score Little.
The Pack scored one run in the second on a Black single, a stolen base, a fielder’s choice and an RBI single by senior Neill Jennings. The boys went quietly in the third, but broke the game open in the top of the fourth. They plated five runs as Black reached via an error at second base.
After a pop up by Godly, Holscher hit into a fielder’s choice, putting Black and Holscher on the corners. Jennings drove in Black with a grounder to second, and Holscher scored on a single by Little. Barfield stroked a double down the right field line to move Little to third. Everette followed with an RBI single to right field scoring both Little and Barfield. Everette scored after a second baseman error and two walks.
The Pack closed out the scoring by plating four runs in the top of the fifth. Senior reserve Logan Winstead opened with a solid single to right. He moved around to third on a balk and wild pitch. Jennings laced a solid single to left scoring Winstead. Jennings moved around to third after a stolen base and consecutive walks to Little and Barfield. Jennings, Little, and Barfield all scored on a combination of walks and a hit batter.
