SOAKING IN THE MOMENT: Chrissy McKissick, Style McKissick and Sarah Alligood share a hug after beating North Pitt on their senior night. They went out in spectacular fashion in their last regular-season game at home.

Washington cruised past North Pitt, 12-0 in five innings, in what ended up being a storybook senior night for Chrissy McKissick, Style McKissick and Sarah Alligood.

The Lady Pack led 7-0 entering the bottom of the fifth, needing just three runs to win via the 10-run mercy rule. Alligood led off with a double that took an odd bounce preventing the opposing right fielder from grabbing it quicker. She moved to third base on Meghan Horton’s single through the middle. Both scored when Style McKissick smacked a line-drive base hit up the middle.

Soon after, Hailey Harris reached on a dropped third strike. Chrissy McKissick stepped up to the plate with Harris on second and her twin sister on third. She saw her pitch, put her weight back and hammered it over the fence in centerfield for the game-winning three-run homer.

“That’s the last one I had in me,” McKissick chuckled.

Style McKissick added, “It’s very exciting. I’m proud of (Chrissy). I figured she was going to hit it anyways. I just had it in my heart. When she hits a home run, I just know.”

The win improves Washington to 15-5 overall and 8-1 in the 2-A Eastern Plains Conference. The girls now have a firmer grasp on the No. 1 spot in the league heading into their season finale at North Johnston on Friday.

More so than that, though, the contest was a spectacular night for the team’s three seniors.

“That’s what you hope for every time,” coach Doug Whitehead said. “I couldn’t write that book any better. … When you go out in your last home game of the regular season and go out with a home run, that’s just great.”

Harris pitched a no-hitter in the five-inning affair. She fanned eight batters and issued just two walks. The defense behind her was just as crisp. Washington retired the first six batters it faced. North Pitt also only sent seven batters to the plate between the fourth and fifth innings.

STINGY DEFENSE: Hailey Harris pitches to a Lady Panther batter. She threw a no hitter. The defense behind her was sharp, too, in the 12-0 shutout.

“We were close to perfect there for a while,” Whitehead said. “Other than (two walks), it was a great night. We played good defense and had excellent pitching. Hailey stayed ahead. … That’s what she needs to do. She can’t have walks and she needs to cut her pitch count down. We’ve got a lot to play for.”

After Harris struck out the side in the top of the first, the Lady Pack’s offense carried the momentum over to the bottom half of the frame. Style McKissick knocked a leadoff base hit to shallow left field. Chrissy McKissick then laid down a nice bunt to plate her sister.

Meghan Moore followed up shortly thereafter with a double to the centerfield fence to score McKissick and Jada Lodge. Briley Waters had a sac-fly RBI, scoring Moore, sandwiched between four walks. The Lady Panthers continued to struggle controlling pitches and walked in two more runs, helping Washington take a 6-0 lead after one.

The Lady Pack had quiet second and third innings, but scored once in the fourth and erupted for five more in the game-winning fifth frame.

Washington concludes the regular season at North Johnston on Friday and then sets its sights on the postseason.
