Elwood Samuel Tinker Sr.
March 6, 1926 – May 10, 2016
Mr. Elwood Samuel Tinker Sr., age 90, a resident of 2612 NC Hwy. 99 South, Belhaven, died Tuesday, May 10, 2016 at Vidant Medical Center.
A funeral service will be held at 3:00 PM Saturday, May 14, 2016 at the Chapel of Paul Funeral Home in Belhaven, officiated by Scott Askew and Bro. Jimmy Gray.
Burial will follow in the Smithton Cemetery. Todd Tinker, Brad Tinker, Blake Tinker, Scott Askew, Eric Askew, Virgil Tucker Sr. and Tim Phelps will serve as pallbearers. Members of the American Legion Post # 249 will serve as honorary pallbearers.
Mr. Tinker was born in St. Louis, MO on March 6, 1926, son of the late Fred Tinker and Bertha Turnbough Tinker. He served his country in the U.S. Navy.
On June 8, 1947, he married the former Vonnie Ola Smith who survives. He retired from Weyerhaeuser as a Millwright. Mr. Tinker was a member and deacon at Hancock Primitive Baptist Church in Ayden, a member of the American Legion for 62 years and served as Adjutant for 40 years. He loved to play golf, enjoyed watching the St. Louis Cardinals baseball team and spending time with his four grandsons.
In addition to his wife, Vonnie of the home, he is survived by his children: Sammy Tinker and wife Sue of Pantego; Donna Askew of Plymouth and Margie Tucker and husband, Virgil of Belhaven; his four grandsons: Todd Tinker and wife Darlene, Brad Tinker, Scott Askew and wife Stephanie and Eric Askew and wife Erica; two step-grandchildren: Mickey and Chad Tucker; his brother: Euel Tinker and wife Wanda of St. Louis, MO; six great-grandchildren, 3 step-great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his son-in-law: Hassell Askew; his grandson: Terry Tinker and several brothers and sisters.
The family will receive friends from 1:30–3:00 PM on Saturday, prior to the service at Paul Funeral Home in Belhaven and other times at the home.
