George Augustus Howell III (Gus), age 65, died Wednesday from complications related to Multiple Sclerosis (MS), a disease he has fought for over 30 years. He was born in Rockingham, NC, on April 24, 1951 and graduated from the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill with a BS in Business Administration in 1973.
He began his professional career with the Charlotte Observer as a Relief Manager with the Charlotte News.

He retired from the Charlotte Observer as the Director of Circulation Distribution on December 31, 2000, relocating to Washington in 2001. In 2014 his disease required full-time support at the Davis Community in Wilmington, NC, where he died on June 1, 2016. Gus is preceded in death by his father, George Augustus Howell Jr. and his mother, Mary Aiken Howell, both of Rockingham, NC, and by his two half-sisters Lotta Jeanne Cameron and Lola Teubert. He was an active member of Good Shepherd Presbyterian Church in Charlotte, NC, and was consistently involved in his community. He will also be missed by his sister, Georgia Howell Brown, his five grandchildren and other family and friends. Please join his family for a celebration of life from 2 pm to 5 pm on Sunday, June 5, 2016 at the Hilton Wilmington Riverside (Magnolia Room), 301 N. Water St., Wilmington, NC. Special thanks for the love and support of the Davis Community. In lieu of flowers, please donate to your local food bank, one of Gus’ favorite charities.
