An attempt to use counterfeit money has landed a Washington woman in jail.

According to a press release from the Washington Police Department, Patricia Ann Langley, 53, of Cherry Run Road, Washington, was arrested Tuesday after she attempted to use a counterfeit $100 bill to purchase groceries at Piggly Wiggly in Washington Square Mall, on West 15th Street.

The counterfeit bill was the type sold online as prop money, and clearly states its intended use on the back of the bill — “Motion Picture Use Only” is printed “United States of America” is usually located. Despite the warning, the bills, at a glance, look legitimate.

“The clerk identified the fact that the bill was fake and the police were called,” said Lt. William Chrismon, spokesman for Washington Police Department. “It was the movie money.”

Langley was also in possession of 10 more bills, all of them $100 bills, Chrismon said.

In the past several weeks, the same type of fake bills were used or their use was attempted at several local stores.

Langley was charged with possession of more than five counterfeit instruments. She was also charged with conspiracy to traffic opium/heroin, as part of an ongoing drug investigation, Chrismon said.

Langley was detained in the Beaufort County Detention Center under a $2,000 secured bond, according to the press release.
