Jack Warren Jr., born on March 18, 1939 in Elizabeth City, NC, passed away on Saturday, June 11 at the Lower Cape Fear Hospice in Wilmington, NC. At the time of his death, Jack was surrounded by his loving family who will miss him more than words can say. Jack is preceded in death by his parents, Jack and Helen Kramer Warren; and by his one true love, Susan Wolfe Warren. He is survived by his two loving sisters Dorothy Warren Sauer and husband Ron and Sonja Warren Remington. He also leaves behind three children whom he cherished – Jack O’Neal Warren and wife Tracey, Elizabeth Kipp Register and husband David and Kathryn Warren Webster, all of who live within a mile of each other in Wilmington, NC. Jack was a loving grandfather to six grandchildren. Alicia Register Elkins, Michael Lee Register, Keaton Warren Register, Suzanna Kate Webster, Jacob Thomas Webster, and Cody O’Neal Warren loved their Pappy very much. In addition, Jack is survived by his niece and nephews Sonja Andrew Bailes, John Rodman Andrew Jr. and Neal Warren Andrew, each of whom had a fun and loving relationship with their Uncle Jack. His lifelong friends, Carl and Cathy Jones of Washington, and Rod Andrew of Wilmington, are also among the many friends who were so special to him. One of Jack’s most endearing qualities was the ease to create friendships with everyone who had the good fortune of meeting him. He was a humble and compassionate man who truly cared about people. His natural ability to make people feel at ease while providing a sense of belonging allowed him to make friends wherever he went. Beginning with his childhood friends growing up in Washington Park, through school, his time in the US Army, to those in his spiritual life at church, the many he played golf with, to those at the local library, the “Mecca” and neighborhood bar, he was always quick to entertain those he met with countless stories and humor and wisdom. He genuinely wanted people to feel comfortable and that they belonged.
Jack lived much of his life in Washington, where he loved taking walks along the Pamlico River. After graduating from Washington High School, Jack enlisted in the United States Army. While proudly serving in the Third Infantry Division, he developed friendships that would last a lifetime. In fact, just two short weeks before his death, he attended a reunion with those friends. He felt blessed beyond measure to have had those friendships with his fellow “Marne Men” for more than 50 years.
For the past three years Jack has lived in Wilmington, where he felt God’s grace had allowed him to be with his three children. He also felt very fortunate to have found a Christian home at St. Matthew’s Lutheran Church, where he faithfully worshiped every Sunday.
A celebration of Jack’s life will be held at St. Matthew’s Lutheran Church in Wilmington, NC, on Saturday, June 18th at 11am. Interment and graveside service will be held at Oakdale Cemetery in Washington on Saturday, June 25th at 3pm.
The family extends a heartfelt thank you to everyone at Lower Cape Fear Hospice who made it possible for Jack’s last days to be happy and comfortable.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations be made in Jack’s memory to Lower Cape Fear Hospice and/or St. Matthew’s Lutheran Church.
