Walter G. Sawyer

Walter G. “Jake” Sawyer, 78, of 211 Lovick Lane, Pantego, passed away Friday, June 17, 2016 in Vidant Medical Center, Greenville.
Mr. Sawyer was born in Hyde County on December 14, 1937, and was the son of the late Walter Acton Sawyer and Mabel Lowe Sawyer Marshall. A lifelong farmer, he attended Alligood Church of God in Washington. An avid hunter and outdoorsman, he was a member of Hyde Eight Hunt Club. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers, Robert and Wilbur Sawyer.
Surviving are his wife of nearly 58 years, Lillian Woolard Sawyer; three daughters, Sharon Carowan and husband Conway of Pantego, Lisa Barber and husband Dennis of Jamesville, and Holly Van Essendelft and husband David of Gatesville; a son, Jonathan Sawyer and wife Lynn of Pantego; three sisters, Doris Rose of Pantego, Dorothy Gibson of Earlysville, VA, and Ann Braddy of Belhaven; a brother, Lloyd “Buddy” Sawyer of Pinetown; 10 grandchildren, Dennis III, Stacy, Alicia, Nathan, Josh, Tyler, Danielle, Amber, Jessica and Josie; and 10 great-grandchildren, Kayla, Alexis, Kaitlyn, Jordan, Maddison, Morgan, Joshua, Cole, Kristy and Jaxon.
Funeral services will be held Monday at 3:00 p.m. in Alligood Church of God and will be officiated by Pastor Phillip Jethro. A private burial will follow in the Sawyer Family Cemetery.
Friends may join the family in the church the hour prior to the services on Monday, and all other times at Jonathan and Lynn’s home, 4900 Terra Ceia Road, Pantego.
