Fenner S. Boyd

Fenner S. Boyd passed away on June 27, 2016. He was born in Beaufort County on October 23, 1926. He was the middle child of Fenner Sr. and Roxie Waters Boyd. He was predeceased by his parents and sister, Rachel.

Fenner is survived by: his wife of 62 years, Mildred Cole Boyd of Durham; children, Alan Fenner Boyd and wife, Virginia of Durham, Stephen Cole Boyd of Seven Lakes, West End, NC; brother, Hallet E. Boyd and wife, Inez of Pinetown, NC; and many nieces and nephews.

Fenner served in the US Navy during World War II. While attending East Carolina Teachers College, he was an outstanding baseball player and team captain his senior year. He also played semi-pro baseball. After college graduation, he pursued a career as an educator in the North Carolina public schools that spanned 38 years, 36 of those as a principal. He worked in the counties of Beaufort, Pitt, Harnett, and lastly, Durham. In 1986, he was named Principal of the Year in the Durham City Schools. He was highly respected by both students and faculty for his fair mindedness and common sense approach to educational issues. He was active in both educational and civic organizations throughout his life and was a member of the Durham Civitan Club for 50 years.
