- Scott Barker, of Winterville, rounds the first turn on the bicycle route. He finished 43rd overall in the Olympic Triathlon.
WASHINGTON PARK — The sun was out Saturday morning as over 250 athletes converged on Washington to compete in Sprint and Olympic-length triathlons. It was a hot morning, but the breeze coming off the Pamlico River and occasional cloud helped create a fantastic atmosphere for the races.
The races saw both local and visiting athletes swim a course around the river right off of Riverside Drive in Washington Park. After emerging from the water, each competitor biked down River Road before taking a loop around McCotters Marina Road. The races wrapped up with the athletes running out to the waterfront in downtown Washington and back.
The Olympic Triathlon was a 25-mile course. Kory Gray, of Raleigh, finished first overall in that race. He won the 2015 iteration of the event, too. Todd Midgett, a Wilmington resident, took first overall in the Sprint Triathlon, which was a 12.5-mile race. He also finished first last year.
