Rainfall closes roads at Pocosin Lakes

Due to persistent rainfall, several roads on the Pungo Unit of Pocosin Lakes National Wildlife Refuge have become impassable in spots and have been closed to vehicles. Pungo is a popular spot for birding and wildlife photography this time of year because of the high concentration of wintering waterfowl. The roads on the Pungo Unit are unimproved dirt roads. Recent heavy precipitation, along with higher water levels held for waterfowl habitat, has resulted in sections of roads becoming too muddy for vehicles. If rain persists, some roads will likely have to be kept closed. In addition, heavy rain may cause even more road closures. Roads will reopen as soon as conditions allow.
