The Boys & Girls Clubs of the Coastal Plain recently held its annual Youth of the Year Award banquet at the Jack Minges Unit in Winterville. The regional winner of the award receives a $1,000 scholarship and moves on to compete at the state level. The Washington Unit’s 2016 winner was Joe’l Gardner (below), who attends P.S. Jones Middle School, makes good grades and hopes to attend Florida State University one day. The 2017 Washington winner was Dequan Hicklin (above), who has been a member of the Washington Unit since 2013. Hicklin is known for his positive attitude and taking the initiative.
