WILLIAMSTON — The Washington High Pam Pack baseball team collected a much-needed win Tuesday night with a 7-5 victory over the Riverside Knights in Williamston.

On a cold, breezy evening, Washington’s bats heated up by banging out 13 hits against Knight pitching. The Pam Pack scored four runs in the fourth inning, two runs in the fifth, and one in the sixth. Junior Cooper Anderson led the hitting attack with three hits, while juniors Chris Sulc, Tyler Harrell, and Fred Holsher each collected two hits. Seniors Logan Little, Tripp Barfield, and Matt Black also contributed hits, as did junior designated hitter Drew Ferguson.

Barfield was very effective on the mound with a complete-game effort. Seemingly in control throughout, Barfield gave up four hits, four walks, and he struck out four Knight batters. He allowed two earned runs on the night.

By keeping his pitches low in the zone and with good command, Barfield induced 15 ground ball outs.

While the defense improved, the Pack still committed five errors, some of which led to three Knight runs. Defense continues to be the area of opportunity for this Pam Pack edition. Regardless, the team picked up a big win and improves its record to 2-4.

“The boys fought hard tonight and did not give in. We hit the ball well, and Tripp pitched a good game. However, we need to keep working on our defense. Tonight was a good win for us,” said coach Kevin Leggett.

With conference play looming next week, the Pam Pack needs to continue tuning its game, particularly on defense, with two non-conference outings against Ayden-Grifton coming up.
