AYDEN — The Washington baseball team bounced back in a big way by defeating Ayden-Grifton 15-7 Friday night. The Pam Pack torched Charger pitching for 12 hits, also taking advantage of five errors and eight Charger walks.
From the first inning on, the Pam Pack put pressure on the Charger defense, which led to numerous Charger miscues. The boys scored one run in the first, three runs in the second, two runs in the third, four runs in the fourth, one run in the fifth, and four runs in the seventh. The Chargers changed pitchers often trying to find a pitcher that could shut down the Washington onslaught, but, on this night, to no avail.
Seniors Tripp Barfield, Logan Little, and Matt Black led the attack with nine combined hits. Juniors Chris Sulc, Cooper Anderson, and Tyler Harrell each chipped in with hits, too. On the night, Harrell drilled a triple to left center while Barfield contributed two doubles to left field.
Sophomore lefty Logan Everette made his first varsity start. After striking out the side in the first, he ran into trouble in the second inning when the Chargers scored five runs on a combination of two hits, three walks, one hit batter, and two errors. The Pam Pack turned to Harrell in the third inning. The hard-throwing junior pitched effectively for the remainder of the game. From the third inning on, the Chargers collected only two hits with three strikeouts.
“It was a good win for our guys tonight. We hit the ball well and Tyler pitched effectively. This win gets us ready for conference play next week. Hopefully we can keep this going,” commented coach Kevin Leggett.
With the win, the Pam Pack improves to 3-5 on the year. The first conference game is scheduled for next Tuesday at Farmville Central.
