Ruth’s House to hold benefit golf tournament

Ruth’s House, the shelter for victims of domestic violence in Beaufort County and adjacent areas, will hold its inaugural benefit golf tournament on May 6, at the beautiful Cypress Landing Golf Club in Chocowinity. The tournament will be played in Superball format with four-player teams. Corporate, group and individual sponsorships are available. Individuals will be placed with other players. Check-in begins at 9 a.m. with a shotgun start at 10 a.m. Entrance fee is $75 per player and includes green fees, golf cart and a “goody bag.” Prizes will be awarded for first-, second- and third-lowest score, longest drive, closest to pin, longest putt and possibly other categories (depending on sponsorships).

Ruth’s House provides, at no charge, safe shelter, support services, counseling, legal advocacy and other services as appropriate for women and children victims of domestic violence. (All these services except for shelter are available for male victims of domestic violence as well.)

In the past year, Ruth’s House received over 250 crisis or support calls, helped more than 132 clients with safe shelter and other services, and an average of 130 shelter nights every month. Ruth’s House also provided informational presentations on dealing with and preventing domestic violence to 19 different groups in Beaufort County. Empowerment programs for clients such as employment skills and readiness, financial literacy, child development and healthy living are also provided.

The Ruth’s House court advocate provides clients with information on protective orders, accompaniment to court hearings for protective orders and Family Court, assistance with service of protective orders, victim’s rights information, referrals to other legal and community resources as needed.

Ruth’s House also provides liaison with the Board of Education to enable uprooted children to continue their education. Counseling is also available for adults and children.

The organization is supported by income from Ruth’s House Antiques and More, a shop at 228 W. Main St. in downtown Washington, many local churches and a dedicated corps of volunteers which staff the shop, receive training as house monitors and serve on the Board of Directors.
