A Washington man is in police custody after intentionally setting his apartment on fire.

Washington firefighters responded to North Bridge Street apartment complex a little before 3 p.m. Thursday, battling a blaze allegedly set by 32-year-old Chase Lance Weatherington, according to Washington Police and Fire Services Director Stacy Drakeford.

Weatherington was taken into custody immediately after police arrived.

Weatherington lives in the Washington Housing Authority apartment with his mother, Drakeford said.

Neighbors residing in the other apartment in the same building looked on while the fire was extinguished. No one was injured in the fire, nor was it clear why the fire was set.

Along with Washington police and Fire-Rescue-EMS, Beaufort County EMS, Chocowinity Volunteer Fire Department and Washington Utilities responded to the emergency call.

Drakeford said charges against Weatherington are pending.
