Jay Charles Hardin

Jay Charles Hardin, PhD, 74, of Bath, died on Sunday, June 4, 2017 at Vidant Beaufort Hospital from complications of lung cancer. He was surrounded by his wife of 53 years, Ellen (Huey) Hardin, and sons, Lance, Shane and Brooke. Jay is also survived by three daughters-in-law, Gwyn, Brenda and Cara, and seven grandchildren, Copeland, Max, Jack, Sarah, Gavin, Lyle and Anna, as well as his sister Becky Tallman and husband Bill, brother Scott and wife Bunny, sister Paige Cantwell and husband Dick, brother-in-law Rob Huey, and nieces and nephews.

Jay, born and raised in Franklin, Indiana, earned his degrees at Purdue University and spent his career working in acoustical engineering at NASA Langley, in Hampton, Virginia. Jay also served his profession as an adjunct professor at The George Washington University, Christopher Newport University and Old Dominion University, as well as visiting teaching engagements and collaborative research work at Florida State, Kansas State and other colleges and universities.

After retiring, Ellen and Jay made their home in Bath to enjoy life on the water and found a wonderfully welcoming community of which to become a part. In retirement, Jay continued to share his love of mathematics and teaching by tutoring numerous students from around the community.  He was a man of faith and an active member of Belhaven Missionary Baptist Church, serving as a Deacon and Sunday School Teacher. Jay was a Member of the Bath Town Council.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, June 10 at 1:00pm at Belhaven Missionary Baptist Church (251 Edward Street, Belhaven, NC 27810). In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Belhaven Missionary Baptist Church.

Hillside Funeral Service & Cremations, Hwy 264 East, Washington, has been given the honor of being entrusted with serving the Hardin family.
