Student Council Association members at Tyrrell Elementary School visited the Ronald McDonald House in Greenville on May 9 and delivered the pop tabs collected by school students and staff since the beginning of the school year.
“Ronald McDonald House in Greenville and Durham were a saving grace to myself and my family,” said second grade teacher Rebekah Swain. “They provided us with snacks, a room, amenities and, most importantly, a smile every time we walked through the door. This is such a special service to all families that stay there.”
About the TES pop tab drive, Swain said, “It is so humbling to see many families come together just to donate such a small item that goes such a long way. I greatly appreciate all that TES SCA does to support Ronald McDonald House and the community they serve. Ronald McDonald House of Durham had a saying, ‘We’re all just walking each other home,’ and that’s exactly what TES SCA does!”
The Pop Tab Drive for the Ronald McDonald House Charities is a school-wide community service project sponsored by the TES SCA, which sends very special thanks to everyone who donated.
Collecting pop tabs is a fun and easy way to give back to the Ronald McDonald House in Greenville, the charity’s website states. “When large amounts of aluminum pop tabs are collected at the House, we take them to a recycling center. According to the price of aluminum, the recycling center gives us a check. This check goes back into the House for general operating expenses – keeping our doors open to continue to serve our families.”
Why collect tabs only? They are made of different quality aluminum and are more easily recycled than cans.
The amount of money Ronald McDonald House receives is determined by the weight of aluminum collected: 1,267 pop tabs is one pound
