Three people were hospitalized and U.S. 64 traffic on and near the Alligator River bridge was blocked for extended periods of time on Saturday, June 17, following two collisions, Sheriff Darryl Liverman reported.
At 10:28 a.m. the Regional Emergency Communications Center received a 911 call regarding a three-vehicle accident on the Lindsay Warren Bridge over Alligator River.
A westbound Volkswagen apparently rear-ended a Volvo, and a Chevrolet then plowed into the rear of the VW about a half mile from the Tyrrell County end of the bridge.
Washington-Tyrrell EMS, Tyrrell Volunteer Fire Department, and Tyrrell County Sheriff’s Office responded.
One person was transported to Outer Banks Hospital in Nags Head by EMS ambulance.
Later the same day, at 5:46 p.m., Regional Emergency Communications received a call about a two-vehicle accident with one vehicle overturned on U.S. 64 in front of Alligator River Marina near the west end of the Lindsay Warren Bridge.
Again Washington-Tyrrell EMS, Tyrrell Volunteer Fire Department, and Tyrrell County Sheriff’s Office responded.
EMS ambulances transported one vehicle occupant to Outer Banks Hospital and another one to Vidant Chowan Hospital in Edenton for treatment of injuries.
In each accident U.S. 64 was closed to all highway traffic “for some time,” the sheriff stated. The State Highway Patrol investigated.
