MOVING SLOWLY ON A HOT SUMMER DAY: Dozens of Yellow-bellied sliders (Trachemys scripta scripta) live in Alligator River National Wildlife Refuge. You’ll see them in the ditches, ponds and watery areas. You’ll find them sunning on logs and along canal banks. And once in awhile you’ll find them crossing a road. These turtles are omnivorous, eating insects, crayfish and snails, along with a variety of aquatic plants. (Buster/USFWS)
