Hyde County’s nine emergency services agencies switched their communications to the Regional Emergency Communications Center at Manteo on December 6.

Hyde’s going “live” brought the regional center to full operation. Dare and Tyrrell counties signed on last April 5.

Dare, Hyde and Tyrrell are the first three counties in North Carolina to consolidate emergency 911 communications.

Telecommunicators at the Regional 911 Center provide a vital service to the residents and visitors in Dare, Hyde and Tyrrell counties by linking 911 callers with over 60 agencies that provide emergency services to the region.

The facility on Roanoke Island incorporates the latest communications technology to help provide timely information and efficient emergency response for the people of Dare, Hyde and Tyrrell counties.

The regional 911 center is co-located with the Dare County Emergency Operations Center, which provides an efficient central location for the Dare County Control Group and Dare County Emergency Management to respond to disasters such as hurricanes.

When activated for emergencies the facility houses representatives from many agencies that provide essential services including public safety and law enforcement, utilities, and a variety of organizations providing response and recovery operations.

During activations the large number of support staff housed in the building, many of whom are working non-stop shifts and unable to leave the facility, are able to use the dining and sleeping quarters that have been planned strategically as part of the Emergency Operations Center.
