The Mary Lou Simmons Toy Drive has been helping underprivileged families in Tyrrell County for over 30 years.
It was started by Mary Lou Simmons, a Business Education teacher at Columbia High School. Upon her retirement, the tradition of the toy drive continued through the Columbia High School Future Business Leaders of America.
Residents of Tyrrell County fill out an application to receive toys, and acceptance is then granted based on financial need.
Last year the drive helped provide toys and clothes to 40 children.
The application deadline ended on November 17, and there are approximately 86 children whose families have turned to the toy drive for help this year.
The deadline for toys and contributions is December 12. The toys will be distributed on December 18.
“In hopes for a successful toy drive this year, we are asking for support and contributions from businesses and organizations in Tyrrell County,” said coordinator Eric Roughton.
“All of the toys stay local and anything that can be offered would be a greatly appreciated. Any monetary donations can be accepted in the form of a check made payable to Columbia High School.”
