Mrs. Rhoda Elizabeth Bowen Sullivan, age 95, a resident of U.S. Highway 264 East, Washington, died Saturday, Jan. 20, 2018, at her home.

A funeral service will be held 1 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 23, 2018, from the Chapel of Paul Funeral home & Crematory in Washington, conducted by Cleve Edwards. Burial will follow in Pamlico Memorial Gardens, Washington.

Mrs. Sullivan’s grandsons, John Mullis, J. D. Mullis, Matt Knight, Shane Knight, Bryan Dunn, Josiah Dunn, Michael Sullivan and Sam Sullivan, will serve as pallbearers.

Mrs. Sullivan was born in Beaufort County on Aug. 25, 1922. She was the daughter of the late H.C. Bowen, Sr. and Thelma Latham Bowen. Mrs. Sullivan worked for 25 years at Sears-Roebuck in Arlington, Virginia, and five years at Woolworths in Washington. She was a member of Athens Chapel Church of Christ. Mrs. Sullivan was a former member of the Ladies’ Aide, former Sunday school teacher and choir member.

Mrs. Sullivan is preceded in death by the love of her life, Sam Sullivan, and her son, Gene Sullivan.

She is survived by two sons, Samuel Hilton Sullivan, of Bear Grass, and Paul Arthur Sullivan, of South Hill, Virginia; a daughter, Gwen Sullivan, of the home; 10 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; 12 great-great-grandchildren; sister, Rachel Bowen Cain, of West Virginia; and sister-in-law, Lorraine Bowen, of Washington.

In addition to her parents, husband and son, Mrs. Sullivan was preceded in death by one grandchild; one great-grandchild; brothers, H.C. Bowen, Jr. and Ray Bowen; and sister, Adeline Cutler.

The family will receive friends following the committal at Athens Chapel Church of Christ Fellowship Hall.
