The Blue Devils and Demon Deacons traded jabs in the first quarter of Saturday’s mites championship. It was the boys in blue, however, that pulled away in the third quarter en route to a 37-17 championship win.

Isabella Smithwick got the ball rolling coming out of halftime. She hit the first shot of the third quarter, but the Demon Deacons responded to her and Zackery Brown with buckets from Darius Moore and Jahki Foreman.

Foreman’s basket cut the Demon Deacons’ deficit to single digits, 21-12. Then Reagan Spivey, Sally Ross and Smithwick all hit shots to fuel a flurry of 10 unanswered points to give the Blue Devils a 31-12 lead heading into the fourth.

Moore gave the Demon Deacons some hope with a quick basket to begin the final period, but they couldn’t come back. He was hot out of the gate as he had two of the Demon Deacons’ three makes in the first quarter.

Brown also had a pair of buckets for the Blue Devils in the first. LawDrekyiks Royster and Spivey each made a shot in the first, too, as they helped their side to a 10-6 lead after 10 minutes.

The Blue Devils first created some separation at the start of the second. Both teams struggled early on, but Tynese Long had the first basket of the period and sparked a 5-0 run for the Blue Devils.
