KINSTON—The Southside girls’ soccer team won its third game in a row, going to Kinston and vanquishing the Vikings 3-1 on Wednesday.

Southside (7-7, 1-0) opened the scoring in the first half, thanks to sophomore Samantha Rodriguez netting her second goal of the season. The Seahawks took the 1-0 lead into halftime. Rodriguez continued making an impact on the game in the second half, but this time she turned provider. The forward set up senior Guadalupe Perez for the game’s second goal. It was both Perez’s first goal of the season and Rodriguez’s first assist.

Down 2-0 in the second half, Kinston (0-13, 0-8) showed it wouldn’t go down without a fight. The Vikings scored to cut their deficit to only one goal and make the Seahawks nervous. Southside goalkeeper Carleigh Findley was called into action to preserve her team’s lead, making four saves throughout the game.

Southside sophomore Sindy Chavez then put her team at ease, scoring to increase the Seahwaks’ lead back to two goals at 3-1. It was Chavez’ twelfth goal of the year, good for the team lead.

This was Southside’s second time beating Kinston within the last six days, having defeated the Vikings 6-0 at home last week. The Seahawks next play on Monday at 6 p.m., when they travel to Tarboro for their final conference game of the year.
