The Down East Seniors Club held its May 2 meeting at the Blind Center of North Carolina in Washington. Vice President Gary Brinn led the meeting. Jim Hackney played for the singing of “God Bless America,” followed by the Pledge of Allegiance. Charles Smith gave the invocation, and Ed Hamrick read factoids for the date in history. Mark Eakes provided humor.

Brinn introduced Christie Moler, interim executive director of the Blind Center. Moler told the club about their Rock-A-Thon fundraiser to be held Saturday.

Hamrick introduced Debra Torrence, executive director of Arts of the Pamlico. She said AOP is expecting to be debt-free by August. AOP has many events scheduled, with the main emphasis being on visual arts. They will soon add a full-time events coordinator. They have spaces available for rent where meetings and banquets can be held. There are also smaller exhibit spaces for rent to individual artists at low cost so they can introduce their work to the public. They have had inquiries from professional entertainers who are interested in performing here. They are also working with a group that wants to create an outdoor drama to be performed on the waterfront. There are many other activities going on that are included in the monthly schedule published in the Washington Daily News at the beginning of each month.
