At approximately 9:30 a.m. on May 14, John Curtis Jenkins Jr. turned himself in to the Beaufort County Magistrate’s Office, where he was served with warrants from Beaufort County for assault by strangulation and second degree kidnapping. Jenkins was also served with an order for arrest from Pitt County for violating his conditions of release in a previous assault case.

Jenkins was taken before a Beaufort County District Court judge where he was ordered held on a $450,000 secured bond for charges in Beaufort County. His bond for the violation in Pitt County was set at $50,000, secured.

Jenkins is a currently sitting member of the Chocowinity Board of Commissioners. According to the North Carolina State Board of Elections, only  municipalities in the state of North Carolina have recall mechanisms in place to remove elected officials from office. In order to establish a recall mechanism, municipalities must seek permission from the N.C. General Assembly. While Belhaven has such a mechanism in place, Chocowinity does not.
