VFW Memorial Day service set for 8 a.m. Sunday

Glynn T. Cahoon Post 10659 of the Veterans of Foreign Wars will host the annual Memorial Day commemoration at 8 a.m. Sunday, May 27, in Madge L. VanHorne Auditorium.

U.S. Navy Commander Jack Morris, executive officer of the Center for Aviation Technical Training in Norfolk, Virginia, is slated to be the guest speaker.

Raised in Hinesville, Georgia, Commander Morris graduated high school and joined the Navy in 1987 and two years later married into the Armstrong Clan of Gum Neck in Tyrrell County. He earned a bachelor’s degree in Professional Aeronautics from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University and a master’s in Business Administration from Naval Postgraduate School.

His personal awards include the Bronze Star, Defense Meritorious Service, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (9 awards), Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (2 awards), Army Achievement Medal, and the U.S. Naval Academy Ethical Leadership Award.

The Memorial Day ceremonies will also include laying of a wreath in remembrance of fallen comrades.
