The Career and Technical Education Department in Tyrrell County Schools will be adding two STEM labs to the program during the 2018-19 school year, Dr. Will Hoffman, superintendent, announced June 1.

STEM is the acronym for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math.

“STEM pervades every part of life,” Dr. Hoffman stated. “It provides a curriculum that has real-life situations through hands-on and mind-engaging activities to help students learn.”

STEM-related work is a prevalent part of Career and

Technical Education, and it is found in each of the career clusters offered at Columbia High School — Health Sciences, Agriculture, Business, Finance, and Information Technology.

The two new labs will provide lessons that offer innovative and challenging experiences including 3D printing and robotics and coding, Dr. Hoffman explained.

Students will be able to create products and explore a variety 21st century careers as part of these labs.

Students will also work collaboratively with their peers, as well as the CTE teaching staff, to problem solve different challenges and real world dilemmas.
