Tyrrell County voters, along with all others across North Carolina, will be asked to vote for or against an unprecedented six amendments to the state Constitution when they cast their ballots in the general election next November.

These proposed amendments will deal with the following issues:

• Voter identification
• Lowering the cap on state income tax
• Changing the way mid-term judicial vacancies are filled
• Changing the structure and process of selecting the  Bipartisan State Board of Elections and Ethics Enforcement
• Protections for hunting and fishing
• Victims’ rights

The North Carolina General Assembly has long been recognized as one of the most powerful legislative bodies in the nation, but some questions must be submitted to the voters before becoming law, and occasionally the lawmakers decide to “pass the buck.”

The General Assemby adjourned on June 29 until November 27, when both the House and Senate are scheduled to reconvene.

Before the gavels came down for the final time, the legislators also overrode eight of Governor Cooper’s vetoes.
