Can’t control the beast — Alligatorweed

Published 12:32 pm Tuesday, July 10, 2018

Alligatorweed impedes drainage and robs the water of nutrients for animals and native plants throughout Tyrrell County, despite the county government investing thousands of dollars and hundreds of man hours yearly in control measures. It is believed to have been accidentally introduced to the United States through sediments in the cargo of ships traveling from its native South America. This early July photo is of the canal beside Riders Creek Road south of Columbia.
