4-way stop set for Bridge Street

The Columbia Board of Aldermen on July 2 ordered four-way stop signs erected at the intersection of Bridge Street and Church Street to the south and Columbia Street to the north.

The north-south streets are offset by about 20 feet, so the new stop signs on Bridge Street will be set back a similar distance.

The need arises from motorists northbound on Church Street being unable to see westbound traffic on Church Street because of a small building in the southeast corner of the intersection.

The building was occupied until recently by Plum Pony Boutique, and was for a generation Mrs. G.N. Hurdle’s Store, one of the town’s last neighborhood groceries.
